Can Thai IVF Reduce the Occurrence of Rare Diseases?

The occurrence of rare diseases is mainly due to genetic mutations. Currently, about 7,000 diseases are known to be caused by specific gene changes. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), one in every 100 babies is born with one of these diseases. Each of our cells contains genetic information, DNA. Every gene has two copies, one inherited from the mother and the other from the father. When a gene mutates and cannot function properly, it causes genetic diseases. Although parents may not show symptoms of genetic diseases, if both carry the same genetic mutation, there is a 25% chance their child will be affected.

Genetic diseases cannot be cured but can be prevented. If the same gene mutation is detected in both parents, there are two options to conceive a healthy baby:

1. In vitro fertilization (IVF) with preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD): This involves testing the embryos to see if they carry the mutation and implanting only those without the disease into the mother's uterus.

2. Gamete donation: Using donor sperm or eggs that are genetically compatible with one of the partners for assisted reproductive treatment.

Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) is a laboratory procedure used in conjunction with IVF to reduce the risk of genetic diseases. PGD is suitable for any known specific genetic mutations. IVF techniques in the USA, Thailand, and Taiwan can perform this diagnosis.

In the Thai IVF process, doctors retrieve several mature eggs and fertilize them using intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). The embryos grow in a culture medium until they reach the 6 to 8 cell stage (the third day of embryo development). At this point, a biopsy is performed on the embryos to remove one or two cells. This process does not harm the remaining cells in the embryo. The isolated cells are then evaluated using PGD. If the embryos are healthy, they are transferred back to the woman's uterus on the fifth day of embryo development. IVF USA's partner clinics' embryology labs have extensive experience in embryo micromanipulation and biopsy, helping families achieve their goal of healthy offspring.
