What is the process and cost of egg freezing?
Many women facing difficulties conceiving may wonder if they need a hysterosalpingogram (HSG) to assess the condition of their fallopian tubes. HSG is a diagnostic procedure using X-ray contrast to examine the uterine cavity and fallopian tube anatomy, with an accuracy rate of about 85%. This test is suitable for women with a history of recurrent miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, or significant reproductive tract inflammation.
HSG marks the anatomical structures of the uterus and fallopian tubes, detecting conditions such as tubal blockages, damage, uterine structural abnormalities, fibroids, polyps, and endometriosis. Contraindications include pregnancy, allergies to contrast agents, acute inflammatory diseases, abnormal uterine bleeding, acute kidney/liver/heart failure, infectious diseases, and hyperthyroidism.
Typically performed in a hospital setting with the patient lying supine, HSG generally does not require anesthesia. A gynecologist inserts a thin catheter to deliver the contrast agent into the woman's body, which may cause discomfort but subsides within minutes. Based on the imaging results, doctors analyze and determine the condition of the uterus and fallopian tubes.
HSG is useful for imaging diagnosing pathological issues of the uterus and fallopian tubes, assessing uterine condition, tube size, position, and patency. Normal indicators show a triangular uterine cavity and band-like shadows for fallopian tubes. Irregularities such as inflammation, fibroids, and polyps may manifest as irregular shapes in the endometrium, while adhesions in the fallopian tubes appear as alternating dark and light areas.
Although IVF-PGT involves fertilization outside the fallopian tubes, experts recommend women undergo a tubal examination before IVF-PGT to exclude the possibility of tubal fluid or inflammation, as these conditions may affect embryo implantation. Additionally, recent HSG may enhance fertility chances as it clears the tubes during the procedure, removing minor adhesions, mucus, and dead cells.
