What is the process and cost of egg freezing?
In our lives, some decisions have the power to shape our futures. For Xiao Xiao,
that decision came at the age of 30 when she chose to freeze her eggs.
Xiao Xiao, an independent and successful professional, had been immersed in her career, leaving little time to find her life partner. However, the desire to have her own child had always lingered within her. Thus, she decided that if she didn't find a suitable partner before the age of 30, she would undergo the process of egg freezing.
The journey of egg freezing in the United States began. This process is akin to half of the in vitro fertilization (IVF) procedure. Xiao Xiao embarked on her egg freezing journey in the United States. It started with ovarian stimulation, using fertility drugs to induce the ovaries to produce multiple mature eggs. This process requires close monitoring to ensure the eggs mature and are ready for retrieval. Subsequently, the doctor performed the egg retrieval procedure, a swift and precise process typically completed within 15 minutes. The extracted eggs were rapidly frozen to maintain their freshness, preparing them for future use.
Xiao Xiao shared her experience of freezing eggs: "The entire process went very smoothly. I had a good response to the medication from the beginning, and all test results were normal. I injected the ovarian stimulation medication for about ten days, then underwent the egg retrieval procedure. The surgery was done under anesthesia, and when I woke up, I felt a bit sore in the stomach, but nothing particularly uncomfortable." After the egg retrieval, the doctor informed her that a total of 17 eggs were retrieved, with 11 already mature and suitable for freezing.
However, the story of frozen eggs didn't end there. Xiao Xiao met her life partner at the age of 39. After three online dates, the two developed mutual feelings. In an honest conversation, Xiao Xiao revealed her experience of freezing eggs, and together, they envisioned a future with a complete family. A year later, they tied the knot and decided to use the previously frozen eggs to conceive at the age of 40.
Out of the 11 frozen eggs, 9 successfully thawed, 7 were fertilized, and three developed into the blastocyst stage. Recalling the moment, Xiao Xiao said, "I started to get very nervous at that time, but luckily, I finally received the call. The hospital told me that two embryos were normal after genetic testing." The subsequent process went smoothly. "About ten days later, I received the most important call of my life," Xiao Xiao reminisced. "My nurse told me I was pregnant! At that time, my family was overjoyed for me, especially considering I was already 40, and everyone thought I wouldn't have children anymore."
In 2021, Xiao Xiao's daughter was born eight days before the due date. Today, this little girl over two years old has become the apple of her parents' eyes. Xiao Xiao enthusiastically talks about her daughter, describing her as "smart, fun, and outgoing." Xiao Xiao believes that the best decision she ever made was to freeze her eggs, enabling her to find love and have a precious daughter.
