As more families choose to pursue U.S.-Mexico IVF or U.S.-Mexico egg freezing, male fertility health has become equally important. Research shows that when men are over 40, the chances of their partner conceiving naturally drop significantly. Beyond age, testosterone levels, lifestyle habits, and overall health all play major roles in sperm quality. Among these factors, smoking and alcohol are often the overlooked invisible killers.

Doctors point out that alcohol consumption can significantly reduce male fertility. Long-term excessive drinking may lead to decreased testosterone production, erectile dysfunction, and reduced sperm generation. Studies have shown that drinking more than five units per week (about five glasses of beer or wine) can noticeably affect sperm count and morphology. Fortunately, quitting alcohol can reverse these negative effectsbut it takes time. Since sperm take about 72 days to mature, maintaining a healthy lifestyle for at least two to three months is necessary to see real improvement.

Smoking poses an even more direct threat. Tobacco smoke contains over 4,000 chemical compounds, many of which are carcinogenic. Smoking not only reduces semen volume but also damages sperm membranes, lowering their survival rate within the eggs environment. A study involving 2,542 men found that smokers generally had lower sperm counts and motility than non-smokers. In other words, even for those planning to undergo IVF-PGT, quitting smoking before conception can significantly increase the success rate.

In advanced U.S. IVF treatments, PGS/PGD genetic screening technology can detect chromosomal and genetic abnormalities in embryos. When sperm quality is suboptimal, this technology helps select the healthiest embryos, thus improving implantation success. This is why IVF-PGT technology in the U.S. and Mexico has become a growing source of hope for couples facing infertility.

Preparing for conception is not solely a womans responsibilityit requires effort from both partners. Maintaining regular sleep, eating a balanced diet, exercising moderately, and avoiding smoking and alcohol are key to improving both natural conception and IVF success rates. Fertility is not only a medical issue but also a reflection of ones lifestyle.

Sometimes, change begins with quitting a single cigarette or a glass of wine. Healthy sperm are the first step toward creating new life and nurturing hope.
