In the world of celebrities, there is a noticeable trend of older fathers, contrasting sharply with the older actresses in the entertainment industry seeking assistance for pregnancy. Many male stars seem to consider starting a family and having children only in their advanced years. While we are well aware of the increased risks of pregnancy for women over 35, is it true that older fathers face no risks?

1. Can a man give birth no matter how old he is?

It is commonly believed that women become advanced maternal age at 35, while men are thought to be capable to conceive at 40, 50, 60, or even 70. However, although men theoretically can conceive throughout their lives, it is not advisable to choose the time of reproduction indiscriminately. Men also have a reproductive biological clock, and despite its greater flexibility, careful consideration of the timing is necessary.

2. Is Younger Sperm Better?

Age is not the sole determinant of sperm quality. A 40-year-old man with a healthy lifestyle may have higher-quality sperm than a man in his 20s with an unhealthy lifestyle. Avoiding stress, obesity, medications, alcohol, and smoking, which harm overall health, can improve sperm quality and ensure that future generations inherit superior genes.

3.Are There Risks in Older Fathers Having Children?

(1) Advanced paternal age is not conducive to fertility

Recent studies show that as men age, the number of DNA breakages in sperm increases, leading to higher chances of infertility, miscarriage, and congenital defects. Men over 50 have an increased occurrence of genetic mutations in sperm, potentially causing fetal abnormalities and an elevated mortality rate.

(2) Increased incidence of infertility in older fathers

With advancing age, male reproductive function gradually declines, manifested by the shrinking of reproductive organs, changes in reproductive hormone levels, and a decline in sperm quality.

(3) Increased chances of sperm mutations with age

The older a man gets, the more likely sperm mutations become, correlating with an increased risk of inherited genetic diseases in the next generation. Compared to a 29-year-old male, the risk of autosomal dominant mutations in offspring of a 40-44-year-old father increases by 1 fold, rising to 17 times at 45. Advanced paternal age increases the risk of children developing conditions like schizophrenia, autism, and attention deficit disorders.

(4) Male age affects female fertility

The age of the male partner influences the success and miscarriage rates of pregnancy in females. After the age of 40, male partners significantly decrease the chances of their wives getting pregnant, and if the husband is over 40, regardless of the wife's age, the risk of miscarriage increases several times. The golden age for male fertility is between 30 and 35 years old, during which sperm quality is highest and motility is strongest. Choosing to conceive at the optimal age can pass on the best genes to the next generation.

4. Is There a Male Fertility Golden Period?

Men also have a golden age for fertility, generally around 30, where sperm quality peaks and maintains a high-quality state for about five years. During this period, men are physically robust, have abundant energy, and possess strong sperm with high motility. Choosing the best age for reproduction can pass on the best genes to the next generation. Due to the significant impact of advanced age on male fertility, potential issues should be taken into consideration during pregnancy preparation, and pre pregnancy examinations and health measures should be taken to effectively reduce the risks caused by age factors.
